He does his best it would be easier if people stopped DYING to do so - it's not something that people will remember about him, later. But it will be no less true, for all that.

He taps her glass with his. "To all the ones you have yet to come."

That would generally help, yes. Canien won't forget. In the end, those who matter will remember, even if they reside in the Halls.

"For us both." Because she will live for him, with all he's taught her. All the love he's given her.

Such is Arda Marred, Caranthir knows, and tries not to wish for more than what he already has.

"You will do well." He nods. "My bright girl."

Middle-Earth is far from perfect. But it's home, and Canien loves it with all she is. She will be the shield and the sword in the ways her father can't be.

"You have taught me well and you know it."

Everything he has to give, all the good he has left in him, he knows, will go with his bright girl. And that's fine. It's how it has to be.

"I did. And your life will be the proof of that. My Canien."

"My long life." She knows it. So she will stay alive as long as she has the skill, and keep learning. He's taught her all he can- she won't forget a second of it.

"I do not regret working and fighting beside you." She feels it's important he knows that too.

"It had better be long!" He grunts at her half-heartedly.

He flushes at that - even now, his fair skin is too quick to betray him.

"Thank you, daughter." He says quietly but with no less sincerity for that.

"As long as I can manage," she promises softly but earnestly.

Canien grins with delight at the blush but only stands enough and leans over to kiss his cheek affectionately.

"You have prepared me for this life, father. Now it is time I learn more through experiences, and others."

"I hope it will be very long." He flushes a bit harder, but reaches up to run fond fingers through her hair.

"I have done everything I could." He agrees. "And I think it will serve you well"

She leans into the affection, grin softening to a smile. "I have learned caution." Whether she always employs it is another thing entirely.

"It will." She has her parents' stubbornness, and their creativity. "I will make my own path from here on."

"Caution, and wisdom, and as much sense as we could teach you." He agrees.

He holds her close and promises himself that no matter what, he'll remember this moment, another jewel amongst all his memories of her.

"Yours will be a brilliant path."

She chuckles softly, tucking herself close. She'll never forget her father's love and kindness, even in these last days.

"It will be a long one." She'll just...keep going. Wherever she thinks she can do good.

"It had better be!" He mock huffs at her, but the underlying worry is real.

"After all your mother and I did to make it so!"

She leans up to kiss his cheek at the worry.

"If, in some distant future, if there is a way, would you ever want me to Sail and see what once was your home?" She doesn't expect to have that option, but she wants to know his thoughts. And to offer reassurance that she plans to live a very long life.

He considers that for a while.

"Mother would like to see you." He says eventually. "It might comfort her, I think. But only if you ever want to go."

There's nothing in Aman for his wild and restless daughter except a grandmother she has never known - he will not ask that of her. But if she ever goes...

"If the choice is open, and if you want to go, my mother will welcome you."
